California State University, Long Beach [CSULB] is as large as a small city. More than 33,000 students, nearly 2,000 faculty and 1,600 professional staff members study and work on campus each week.
Known nationally as 'The Beach,' CSULB overlooks the Pacific Ocean, its 322-acre campus designed to encourage student involvement and success. Eighty buildings housing 63 academic programs harmonize with master planned architecture, landscape and environmental sculpture, realization of the vision of renowned architect Ed Killingsworth.
Specialized instruction facilities support the sciences, engineering, nursing, computer studies, fine arts, film studies, research centers and more. Outstanding performance venues include the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, the Martha Knoebel Dance Center and the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Daniel Recital Hall. Athletic competitions and major events are offered in the Walter Pyramid, while cultural and educational programs are the focus of the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden. Student activities and organizations are housed in the University Student Union, located in the center of campus to best serve its community.
Long Beach Long Beach is the 35th-largest city in the nation and the fifth-largest in California. As of January 1, 2009, its estimated population was 492,642. In addition, Long Beach is the 2nd largest city within the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city completely surrounds the city of Signal Hill.

In driving time, you can be at Universal Studios in Hollywood in 45 minutes; seeing the sites in San Diego City limits in 90 minutes, skiing at Bear Mountain in 2 hours, having Margarita's in Tijuana, Mexico in 2 hours, go hiking in the desert in 2 hours, and play at the casinos in Las Vegas in 4-1/2 hours.
Cycling - The City of Long Beach is striving to be the most bicycle friendly urban city in the nation. In 1988, the city linked the existing 29-mile bike path system to over 60 miles in four additional major Class 1 bike paths (separate off road bike paths). Also provided are many Class 2 (painted lanes on roadway) and Class 3 paths (shared use of road with cars).
The city also has a Bike Station located on the First Street Transit Mall (light rail, buses, pedestrians, and a local shuttle that services neighborhoods and key attractions) offering 24-hour attended indoor bicycle parking, bike rentals, retail sales, repair services, a bike shop and more.
Transit - Long Beach Transit serves the Long Beach, Lakewood and Signal Hill areas. All routes are wheelchair accessible (surfboards 6 feet and under are welcome). Long Beach Transit has connections with the Metro light rail service to Los Angeles, El Segundo and Norwalk, and neighboring cities (Carson, Compton, Paramount, Bellflower, Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Norwalk, and Seal Beach).
Long Beach Transit also has free 'Passport' routes throughout the downtown area. It also operates the 49-passenger AquaBus water taxi; and the 75-passenger AquaLink water taxi.
There is also limited bus service to Orange County through Orange County Transportation Authority buses. Torrance Transit buses go from downtown Long Beach to the South Bay. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) has bus service from downtown to San Pedro, and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) has two regional bus lines that serve downtown Long Beach.
Light Rail - Long Beach is the southern terminus for the Los Angeles Metro Blue Line light rail corridor. The Blue Line MetroRail connects downtown Long Beach to the Staples Center and downtown Los Angeles where it connects with Hollywood and Pasadena.
Airport - Long Beach Airport serves the Long Beach, South Bay and northern Orange County areas, but is relatively small, considering the area's population. It is the West Coast hub for JetBlue Airways. It is also the site for the Boeing aircraft production facility.
